Udupi is a city in the southwest Indian state of Karnataka. It’s known for its Hindu temples, including the huge, 13th-century Sri Krishna Temple, which houses a statue of Lord Krishna and attracts many pilgrims. Nearby, the ancient Anantheshwara Temple is dedicated to the god Shiva. The Corporation Bank Heritage Museum features coins dating from 400 BC, plus stamps and displays about India’s banking industry.
To the northwest, long, sandy Malpe Beach is a water-sports hub. Offshore, St. Mary’s Islands are a group of four small islands. Ferries lead to the largest one, which has coconut trees and basalt rock formations. Farther south are Mattu Beach and Kapu Beach, with a lighthouse. East, in Manipal, Hasta Shilpa Heritage Village is a cultural site preserving traditional architecture and crafts. To the north is Malyadi Bird Sanctuary, a marshy area for migratory and local birds such as sandpipers and cormorants. East of Udupi, the forested Kudremukh National Park is home to endangered wildlife including tigers and lion-tailed macaques.

When to Visit: Peak travel periods include Apr–May and Dec–Jan. Udupi has a tropical climate, with warm to hot weather year-round, peaking Mar–May. Monsoon season (Jun–Sep) sees frequent heavy rainfall. Winter (Dec–Feb) is warm and typically dry. Many Hindu festivals take place at Sri Krishna Temple, including the Paryaya festival (Jan, alternate years). The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi (Aug/Sep) honors the Hindu elephant god Lord Ganesh with several days of celebrations, including lively processions and tiger dances, a local folk dance.
