Telangana is a state in southern India. In the capital of Hyderabad, the Charminar is a 16th-century mosque with 4 arches supporting 4 towering minarets. The monument overlooks the city’s long-running Laad Bazaar. Once the seat of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, the sprawling Golconda Fort is a former diamond-trading center. In the city of Warangal, the centuries-old Warangal Fort features carved stone towers and gateways.
Just outside of Warangal, the elaborate Thousand Pillar Temple is an example of ancient Kakatiya architecture. In the east, Bhadrachalam town’s Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy Temple is a Hindu pilgrimage site on the banks of the Godavari River. Medak Cathedral, in the town of Medak, was built in the Gothic style, with colorful stained-glass windows. A long suspension footbridge connects 3 islands on Laknavaram Lake. A trail leads through thick forest to the Bogatha Waterfall, which tumbles over a wide rock ledge. The Ananthagiri Hills are a popular hiking destination with jungle trails, valley views and ancient caves and temples.
When to visit: A popular time to visit Telangana is Oct–Mar, when the weather is warm to hot, and relatively dry. Telangana has warm weather year-round, with particularly hot days Mar–Jun. It’s very wet during monsoon season (Jun–Sep), making it an ideal time to see Bogatha Waterfall at its fullest. Hindu women around the state celebrate the Bathukamma festival (usually Sep/Oct) with colorful flower creations. Bonalu (Jul/Aug) honors the goddess Mahakali with a huge procession in Hyderabad.
