Pelling is a small town in the northeastern Indian state of Sikkim, at the foothills of Mount Khangchendzonga. The late-17th-century Buddhist Sanga Choling Monastery has mountain views. Pemayangtse Monastery features wall paintings, sculptures and a gold-plated statue of Guru Padsambhava. Overlooking a valley, the 17th-century Rabdentse Palace, now in ruins, but has evidence of the king’s bedroom and kitchen.
When to visit: A popular time to visit Pelling is Oct–Dec, when the weather is clear and sunny for good mountain views. The least busy time is during the monsoon season in summer (Jun–Aug), when landslides are common. Local celebrations include Tibetan New Year, also known as Losar (Jan/Feb). Khangchendzonga Winter Tourism Festival (Dec) has cultural events and promotes trekking and other outdoor activities in the region.
