Allahabad (Prayagraj) is a city in Uttar Pradesh state, north India. Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna and “invisible” Saraswati rivers, is considered holy by Hindus. It’s near the 16th-century Allahabad Fort, built by Mughal Emperor Akbar. In the fort are the ancient sandstone Ashoka Pillar, the underground Patalpuri Temple and a sacred banyan tree. The Allahabad Museum has Rajasthani miniature paintings.
Inside the walled garden Khusro Bagh are the 17th-century Mughal-style mausoleums of Emperor Jahangir’s family members. Anand Bhavan, the ancestral home of the Nehrus, is now a museum with memorabilia from the Nehru-Gandhi family. It’s next to Swaraj Bhavan, birthplace of the former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi, and close to the domed Jawahar Planetarium. West of the city, Chitrakoot is a forested area associated with the Hindu “Ramayana” epic poem. It’s believed that Rama and his wife Sita, the main characters in the verse, spent over a decade here in exile, and it’s now a place of pilgrimage.
When to Visit: The climate in Allahabad is mainly warm and temperate. A popular time to visit is during the drier, cooler months of winter (Dec–Feb). Temperatures increase Mar–May, and it then gets cooler during the monsoon season (Jul–Sep). Allahabad is one of the 4 venues in India where the Kumbh Mela takes place every 12 years. It is an immense Hindu sacred festival where thousands of pilgrims pray and bathe at the confluence of the rivers.
